7 tips for self–care as a new mom

Self-care as a new mom is just essential acts that can make the world of difference. Here are a few tips that can make you feel more like yourself and less like a milkmaid zombie.

• Get the sleep you need! I know it sounds crazy saying this when you’re a new mom. Ask for help if you needed it. A friend, parent or spouse to help for a few hours so you can sneak away for a nap. It can make a world of difference.

• Take a shower. Washing away a day of breast feeding and spit-up will make you feel like a new person. You also get a clean change of clothing out of the deal! Even if it only lasts a few minutes or hours.

How a Puma and her cubs were the support I needed postpartum :)

How a Puma and her cubs were the support I needed postpartum :)

The second thing I remember was the exhaustion. I guess sleep deprivation and exhaustion go hand in hand. It may have been those two things I was feeling when I would lock myself in the only bathroom in our house and flip through National Geographic magazines. I may have also been hiding from my babies… But I kept coming back to an article about a puma and her 2 cubs. There was this one image of her and her two cubs snuggling together. They looked more like teenagers at this point and all I saw in her eyes was pure exhaustion. Talk about projecting my feelings onto her. I would look at it so often that I had decided which puma cub was Nina and which was Lawrence. I did what any rational new mom would do. I ripped that page out of the magazine and stuck it on the fridge. I thought to myself if she can raise 2 cubs so can I! I came so close to writing my kids’ names on each cub and framing it. Good thing we moved before I had the chance to do it!

Why Moon? Why Mama?

Why Moon? Why Mama?

Something I don't really talk about is how I am a woman in her mid 30’s and I’m afraid of the dark..

Yes this is a real problem.  LOL.

I can thank my two older brothers who had us watch the classic zombie movie, Night of the Living Dead. And I must give credit to the 1986 psychological horror drama, IT. For years I was afraid to take a shower and would only bathe with my eyes open at all times!

Three lessons I learned from being diagnosed with gestational diabetes (GD)

When I was first diagnosed with gestational diabetes, I didn’t expect it to affect my diet all that much. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth. I’m more of a pizza and chips kind of girl. Watch my sugar? Sure, no problem! I’ll just skip that piece of cake after dinner. No big deal. Right? Well, not exactly. After meeting with theGD nutritionist I learned my first lesson: everything has sugar in it! Okay, not everything, but pretty close. My usual laissez faire approach to nutrition of everything in moderation wasn’t going to cut it. I had to learn not only about the nutritional content of everything I eat but also the importance of portion control and food combinations.

A journey of Love, Fear and Joy. Becoming a Mom at 19 To a blended family with a new born.

It was like a scene out of a movie. I looked down at the *very clear* two lines, and when I looked up in the mirror at myself, I was seeing double—no, triple. I couldn’t breathe. The smell of the restroom became overwhelming. We had only been together a few months… how was this happening?! I started sweating and crying. Like, the kind of crying that makes you hyperventilate and makes your stomach feel like it’s going to fall out of your body. I feel like we have all cried like that once before in our lives.

How to reduce your c-section scar by massaging the sh!t out of it!

I learned a lot about scars once I had one. The lovely c-section scar that luckily sits below my waist band line is “hidden” by many stretch marks.

I learned many new things including: the art of messaging a scar and the frequency needed of massage; the miraculous nature of castor oil and why they call it the “palm of Christ”; and lastly, that your c-section scar could affect your pelvic floor! My mind was blown!

You’ve got questions about Moon Mama Postpartum underwear; we’ve got answers!

Q: Are they reusable?

A: Yes! Moon Mama postpartum mesh underwear are reusable.

In the world of mesh underwear these babies got your back. They’re "here for a good time, not a long time.” (Thank you Trooper for a great song!) These Mama’s sure as heck do the job in your first few weeks postpartum. If you treat them right, they will be good to you. Made of a polyester spandex knit they stretch and shape to your body. You can wear them pregnant at week 38 and postpartum at week 12. They are that stretchy without losing shape. My best advice is: don’t put them in the wash with your kids Velcro! Oh, and wear wingless pads! These babies will be good to go for your second or third postpartum recovery. As you may already know I passed mine along to my sister-in-law. We both used them up to a year postpartum. She may still be wearing them - I will have to ask! And all those Mama’s that have had a c-section. Get your c-section bellies in here! YOU deserve to feel comfortable. You just had a major surgery. Let's not forget that!

Tis the season for overdoing “it!”

Tips for new moms this holiday season.

My number one tip for this holiday season is take a nap!

This is your time to get some rest. I know it sounds crazy but you have the “get out of jail free card” - also known as a baby. Knowing that you have family and friends visiting or maybe  you’re visiting them, take the opportunity to slip away and a few minutes for yourself. Your family can manage without you for an hour or 2 while you get some oh-so-much-needed rest.

From one to Two! The art of “balancing” baby, toddler and work

1. What didn't you expect when having your second child?

* I didn’t expect not having mesh underwear or pads at the hospital.  Since I had my first child 2 years ago… they cut the supply to mesh underwear and pads. You literally get one pair of underwear and 1 pad for your stay at the hospital, luckily, I brought my own pads… but it was uncomfortable.
