7 tips for self–care as a new mom

When people think of self-care they jump to spa days, massages, green drinks, and yoga. And why not throw in a mindful self-care book while we’re at it?!

Self-care as a new mom is just essential acts that can make the world of difference.

Here are 7 tips that can make you feel more like yourself and less like a milkmaid zombie:

  1. Get the sleep you need! I know it sounds crazy saying this when you’re a new mom. Ask for help if you needed it. A friend, parent or spouse to help for a few hours so you can sneak away for a nap. It can make a world of difference.

  2. Take a shower. Washing away a day of breastfeeding and spit-up will make you feel like a new person. You also get a clean change of clothing out of the deal! Even if it only lasts a few minutes or hours.

  3. Stick to your counselling or therapy sessions; see your primary care provider when needed. I’m a big promoter of a pelvic floor physiotherapist. When your body and mind are in a good place you are winning!

  4. Eat nutritious and enjoyable food. As a new mom that might be tricky. My best tip is to ask your partner, family member (sister, Mom or Dad), or friend to prep fresh veg for you that you can enjoy with dips or hummus on the go. Keep simple snacks on hand like mixed nuts and dried fruit. My late-night snack when breastfeeding was dark chocolate and nuts. I just loved it!

  5. Exercise - you don’t need to go all out right away! A walk can make all the difference in the day. Just get moving – and outdoors if you can.

  6. Take a quiet moment for yourself. If you use that time to clear your head or reflect on the day. It’s your time, enjoy it.

  7. Socialize with the people that matter to you. If that’s your friend or your family, great! If it’s the new mom group, perfect! Connecting with people can make all the difference.

This all sounds like a walk in the park until you are in the thick of it with a newborn. Mama, if you do one of these things a day you are doing a great job!
